Nobody in this industry likes answering this question publicly, which is exactly why it is worth answering. Website design in Australia ranges from a few hundred dollars to well over fifty thousand, and the spread is not arbitrary. It comes down to a handful of things.
What actually drives the price
- Number of pages – a five-page site is a fraction of the work of a thirty-page one with a page per service and suburb
- Template or custom – a template configured well is fast and cheap; a custom build costs more and is worth it less often than agencies suggest
- Who writes the content – this is the most commonly underestimated cost. If you write it, you save money and it takes longer. If we write it, it costs more and moves faster.
- Automation – a brochure site is one job. A site wired into quoting, booking, CRM and follow-up is a different one.
- Ongoing work – hosting, updates, backups and support are separate from the build
Why quotes vary so wildly
Two quotes for the same brief can differ by a factor of ten, and usually the difference is not quality. It is scope that was never pinned down. A quote for a site with no defined page count, no content plan and no agreed number of revisions is not really a quote.
Ask any prospective designer three things: how many pages, who writes the copy, and how many rounds of changes are included. If they cannot answer those, the price is a guess.
What to watch out for
- Not owning your site – some cheap monthly deals mean you never own anything, and you cannot leave without starting again
- Hourly billing with no cap – fine for small changes, dangerous for a full build
- SEO bundled vaguely – “SEO included” often means a plugin was installed
- No tracking – if the site launches without conversion tracking, you will never know whether it worked
Common questions
How much does website design cost in Australia?
Broadly, a small template-based site sits at the low end, a multi-page business site with custom design in the middle, and a large site with deep automation at the top. The honest answer is that scope determines price, so define the scope first.
How much do website designers charge per hour?
Hourly rates vary enormously by experience and location. For a full build, a fixed price against a defined scope protects you better than an hourly rate, because it puts the risk of overruns on the designer rather than you.
Is a cheap website worth it?
Sometimes. If you need a credible presence and nothing more, a well-configured template is fine. It stops being worth it when the site needs to generate enquiries, because that requires structure, content and tracking that cheap builds skip.
What ongoing costs should I expect?
Hosting, a domain, and either a maintenance plan or your own time keeping plugins and backups current. Budget for these separately from the build.
