Local rankings run on a different system to organic search, which is genuinely good news for smaller businesses. You can appear in the map pack without the domain authority needed to rank organically for the same term.
The three factors Google uses
Proximity, relevance and prominence. Knowing which you can change saves a great deal of wasted effort.
- Proximity — how close you are to the searcher. You cannot change this, and it is heavily weighted
- Relevance — how well your profile and website match the search. Entirely within your control
- Prominence — reviews, citations, mentions and links. Influenceable, but slowly
The setting most businesses have wrong
Your primary category is not a ranking factor so much as an eligibility filter. Google uses it to decide whether you are even a candidate for a search. A web design business categorised as a software company will not appear for web design searches at all, no matter how good everything else is. Check yours first — it is the highest-impact five minutes available.
Reviews are the strongest lever you control
Count, average rating and recency all feed prominence. There is no shortcut: incentivised reviews breach Google policy, and fabricated reviews are pursued by the ACCC in Australia as misleading conduct, with substantial penalties and profile suspension. The only durable method is asking real customers consistently, and building it into your handover process.
Everything else, in rough order of value
- Complete every field — Google favours complete profiles and each empty one is a missed signal
- List services individually rather than as a single description
- Add real photos of your work, not stock imagery
- Post updates regularly; dormant profiles perform worse
- Keep name, address and phone identical everywhere online
- Answer questions in the Q&A section yourself
- Respond to every review, which Google states helps
What will not help
Keyword-stuffing your business name is against Google policy and can get your profile suspended. Creating multiple listings for one location is also a violation. Both are common and both carry real risk.
Frequently asked questions
How do I rank higher on Google Business Profile?
Fix your primary category first, complete every field, then build reviews consistently. Proximity you cannot change; the rest you can.
How long does it take to rank in the map pack?
Category and profile corrections can show within days to weeks. Review-driven improvement takes months.
How many reviews do I need?
There is no threshold, but around ten genuine reviews typically makes a visible difference for a small local business.
Does my website affect local rankings?
Yes. Relevance is partly judged on your site, so location-relevant service pages and correct local business schema both contribute.
Can I pay for reviews?
No. It breaches Google policy and, in Australia, fabricated reviews are pursued by the ACCC as misleading conduct.
