What Makes a Good Website? A Practical Checklist

Most checklists you will find are about design. The things that determine whether a business website earns its keep are largely invisible: whether someone can tell what you do, whether they can act, and whether you can tell what happened.

Clarity, first

Someone landing from a search should be able to say what you do, who you do it for, and where, within a few seconds. A surprising number of business websites fail this on the homepage alone, usually because they open with a slogan rather than a statement.

The checklist

  • Can a visitor tell what you do within five seconds?
  • Is there a way to enquire from every page, not just the contact page?
  • Does it load in under three seconds on a phone on mobile data?
  • Is there a page for each service you actually sell?
  • Is there proof — real testimonials, completed work, credentials?
  • Is pricing guidance given, even as a range?
  • Is conversion tracking configured so you know what produces enquiries?
  • Are the common objections answered on the page rather than left to a phone call?
  • Does it work properly on a phone, not just shrink to fit?
  • Is the contact information correct and consistent everywhere?

What matters less than people think

Visual sophistication, animation, and having the newest design trend. These affect first impression and almost nothing else. A plain site that answers questions and makes enquiring easy will out-perform a beautiful one that does not.

The test that settles it

Ask someone who does not know your business to look at the site for ten seconds, then say what you do and how they would get a quote. If they hesitate on either, the problem is not the design.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good business website?

Clarity about what you do, a conversion path on every page, fast mobile loading, and tracking so you know what works. Design matters far less than these.

How do I know if my website is any good?

Check whether it produces enquiries and whether you can tell where they came from. If you cannot answer the second, that is the first thing to fix.

How fast should a website load?

Under two and a half seconds for the largest content element is the Core Web Vitals threshold, measured on mobile.

Does website design affect conversions?

Some, but structure and clarity affect them far more. Most conversion problems are not design problems.

How often should a website be updated?

Content when your services or pricing change; security and plugin updates monthly. A full redesign is rarely needed as often as agencies suggest.
